Mayor Rybak and several legislative leaders will tour and discuss the construction of a new 10 megawatt Lower Saint Anthony Falls hydroelectric project on the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, tomorrow Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 11:15 a.m. at the Stone Arch Bridge, near West River Road on the downtown side of the river.
Construction of the hydroelectric project is at peak level right now with approximately 40 workers on site. It began construction this spring and is to be completed by the end of 2010, contributing more than 63,000 megawatt hours of clean, renewable energy per year to Minnesota – enough to power 14,000 homes a year.
The facility is on the Mississippi River at the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mayor Rybak will be joined by Rep. Bill Hilty, Sen. Ellen Anderson, Sen. Scott Dibble, and Rep. Kate Knuth at a news conference to discuss the project and its importance to the region.
